Having returned from our epic road trip where we covered nearly 1500 miles (2400km) and having been away from home for nearly a month, we couldn’t believe it was almost time to get back on the plane.

Determined to fit it every last little bit of adventure, we hit the streets of San Francisco again. As a stroke of luck, it happened to be Fleet Week, so we were able to see the Blue Angels doing their daring aerobatics right above us as we walked around.

The girls insisted that we go back to the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero because that had been their favourite place to eat. Jess had discovered Breakfast Burritos, but Madeleine had fallen in love with the Mariposa Bakery and its treasure trove of gluten-free treats. Bet of all, most of their goodies were also dairy & soy-free. Over the course of the trip, I think we went there about 3 things and she tried everything from cupcakes to bagels to pop tarts and cinnamon rolls! No wonder she wants to move over there!

The last place on our trip that I really want to share with you is for those of you who have more of a savoury palate than a sweet tooth. Steve took us to a butcher called The Fatted Calf who specialises in charcuterie. Holy dooley were there some treats there! Best of all, most of their sausages and salamis were gluten & dairy-free – something I find quite difficult to find back at home.

I had to get him to order because I was completely overwhelmed and wanted everything!! So he picked a selection of his favourites which we took home to have as pickings for dinner with some fresh salad from my old fave – Mi Rancho. Oh how I miss that little Mexican market!

Well that pretty much rounds up the last of our trip. As it turned out, all of my worries about finding things that Madeleine could eat were entirely unfounded. In actual fact, we had more to choose from than we do here! So I guess the moral of the story is, if you have the opportunity to travel, do it. Don’t let your fear of being able to find appropriate food stop you. At worst, there is always a market somewhere that you can buy some salad and meat, but you just might be pleasantly surprised by what you find!
