Why does my doctor just give me the medication and not discuss how I can change my diet?

Why doesn’t he use food as medicine?

Hasn’t he heard of AIP or Paleo?

And why doesn’t he suggest I go gluten-free like everyone in the forums suggests?

In fact, why does he tell me NOT to go gluten-free when everything I read says I should??

If I had a dollar for every time I heard this…..

well, I’d be a very well off lady by now!!

I actually sat down and had a good think about it the other day after hearing yet another person complaining about it and this is what I came up with.

Your Endo/Paed/GP’s role is to bring your blood test results within the “normal” range.

They can only use pharmaceuticals to treat because that is what they are trained to do. Once the labs are within range, there isn’t much more they can do.

To really get on top of your health and approach it from a wholistic point of view, you need to see a Nutritional Medicine Practitioner or a Naturopath who will treat with diet, supplements and lifestyle, because that is what they are trained to do.

Expecting an allopathic doctor to give you dietary advice (which they are not trained to do) is like asking a car spray painter to rebuild the engine.

Same machine, but they have different jobs.

Your best bet is to build a team of medical and health professionals who all have different areas of expertise and rely on each to do their specific job, rather than hoping you can find one doctor who will do it all.

It becomes even more stressful, heart wrenching and difficult to deal with if it is your child that is sick

because as a parent you desperately want someone to make your child better. I really believe this is the approach you need to take – especially for your own sanity.

There is no point arguing about diet with an Endo, because it is not their speciality and they generally don’t have a deep understanding of it because it isn’t their specialty.

Their speciality is to use drugs to treat your condition and that is what they are best at, and what we go to them for – to get a script for pharmaceutical medication.

In the beginning, I used to come home from the doctor’s in tears or really angry

because I felt that they just didn’t get it. Once I changed my approach, I found that I was able to have a much better working relationship with the doctors, and it was much less upsetting for me (and MUCH less stressful for my poor husband who used to have to deal with the fallout).

At the end of the day, we can’t change their attitude or beliefs, but we can adjust our own.

If you or your child have a chronic illness, you need to establish a good relationship with your doctors because you are going to need their help for a long time.

Ask them for help and seek their guidance in their area of expertise, and rather than getting disappointed because they can’t provide you with all of the answers to everything, seek out others who can.
